Financial Aid Process

All Programs

1) Apply for Scholarships!

At any point in your education, you can apply for outside scholarships. If you are awarded an outside scholarship, please report them to the Financial Aid Office. Your Award Letter will be rerun, and if necessary, your loans will be reduced (Cosmetology only).

2) Apply For Federal Student Aid by filling out the FAFSA Online

The FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Filling it out and entering our school code counts as an initial application for Pell Grants and Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans at Mosley School of Cosmetology.

Important Note!: You are responsible for repaying your loan according to your repayment schedule even if you do not complete your academic program, if you are dissatisfied with the education you received, or if you are unable to find employment after you graduate. If your loans go into default, you are ineligible for receiving further federal student aid, the defaulted loan is reported to credit bureaus, your tax refunds and federal benefit payments may be withheld and applied toward repayment of your defaulted loan (this is called “Treasury offset”), and your wages may be garnished.

4) Confirm Eligibility with the Financial Aid Office

FAFSA Review

The Financial Aid Office will confirm your eligibility for Federal Student Aid. We will check your FAFSA for potentially incorrect, missing, or conflicting information. We also check to see if the U.S. Department of Education has flagged your FAFSA for verification or other required actions (for instance, clearing a defaulted student loan). If any issues are found, we will contact you to request additional information or documentation and tell you your next steps.

Note: Sometimes an action taken to resolve one issue will trigger another issue. For instance, the U.S. Department of Education may select a corrected FAFSA for verification, even if the original FAFSA was not.

For some common eligibility issues, including verification, an unusual enrollment history flag, or a defaulted loan, please check

Verification & Other Common Student Eligibility Issues

You might see a note on your FAFSA Submission Summary saying you’ve been selected for verification; or the Office of Financial Aid might contact you to inform you that you’ve been selected. Verification is a quality-control process to confirm that the data reported on your FAFSA form is accurate. If you’re selected for verification, we will request additional documentation that supports the information you reported.

Don’t assume you’re being accused of doing anything wrong. All you need to do is provide the documentation we asks for—and be sure to do so by the deadline we provide, or you won’t be able to get federal student aid.

In most cases, you won't have to verify income and tax information. However, if you are selected for verification, we may ask you to submit a tax transcript or other documentation to confirm the information you reported.

You may be informed by the Office of Financial Aid that you have been flagged for Unusual Enrollment History. In general, a student whose 2023-24 FAFSA is flagged for an Unusual Enrollment History must provide transcripts for all institutions where the student received a Pell Grant or a Direct Loan for any of the 2019-2020, 2020-2021, 2021-2022, and 2022-2023 award years (the 4 award years prior to the current award year). Unofficial transcripts are acceptable as long as they have official letterhead, are sent directly to the financial aid office, or are retrieved in the financial aid office directly from the school site and signed by an authorized staff member.

If you are currently in default on a student loan, the default will need to be cleared before the Department of Education will allow federal student aid funds to be disbursed. The requirements for clearing a default may vary. In general, you will need to call your loan servicer or the Department of Education at 1-800-621-3115, or write to the U.S. Department of Education, P.O. Box 5609, Greenville, Texas 75403-5609 to clear your default.

Update: Some students may qualify for the Fresh Start Initiative. Federal Student Aid Eligibility for Borrowers with Defaulted Student Loans. Call the Department of Education at 1-800-621-3115 if you believe you may qualify.

Start Classes!

The final step to establishing your initial eligibility for Federal Student Aid is starting classes!

5) Sign Your Award Letter

Once your eligibility has been confirmed, the Financial Aid Office will create your Financial Aid Award Letter. The Award Letter will list all the Federal Student Aid you are currently eligible for at Creative Hair School of Cosmetology (and any scholarships you have received). Once you have received your Award Letter, you will have the option to accept or decline some or all of the aid listed (for instance, you may want to decline some or all Direct Unsubsidized Loans.)

Depending on when you start, an additional award letter may be needed.

6) Financial Aid is Disbursed/Student Stipend Checks are Sent Out

Once you reach each SAP checkpoint (Hours 1, 451, 901, and 1201) your charges for the payment period (listed on your Enrollment Agreement) are posted to your ledger and we perform an eligibility check. If you remain eligible for Federal Student Aid, we notify the U.S. Department of Education, and they disburse your Federal Student Aid for that payment period. If your total financial aid for that period is more than your charges, the remaining balance is given to you in the form of a student stipend check (sometimes called a refund check).

7) Repeat Steps 2, 4, and 5!

Depending on when you start and exactly when you reach each SAP checkpoint, you may need to repeat Steps 1, 3, and 5. Make sure you check with the Financial Aid Office to find out what needs to be done and when.

8) Complete Exit Counseling

Any student who takes out Federal Student Loans must complete Exit Counseling once they graduate, leave school for any reason, or drop below half-time enrollment. The purpose of exit counseling is to ensure you understand your student loan obligations and are prepared for repayment. You’ll also be able to select the repayment strategy that best meets your needs.
